Jobs of the Future: 6 Careers That Will Survive AI

Thinking about a career that's right for you - and one that will keep up with the pace of our changing world - can be as overwhelming as it is exciting. The digitalization and automation of almost every job sector, coupled with the unprecedented rise of AI, has led to the growth of machine learning-related careers.

These changes have not, however, eclipsed the importance of many other career paths which have evolved alongside our increasingly digitalized world, growing in relevance as the UK job market adapts to national and global challenges.

1. Cybersecurity Expert

  • Cyber-attacks and data breaches come hand-in-hand with an increasingly digitalized world. As each sector continues to rely more heavily on digital infrastructure, there is a growing need for cybersecurity specialists to ensure that these systems are resilient, and that data is protected.

  • As the speed of digital advances continues to increase, new vulnerabilities will be discovered and exploited. Cybersecurity will therefore continue to be prioritized across businesses and governments to stay ahead of the curve.

  1. Data Scientist

  • Many argue that we are entering a 4th Scientific (or Industrial) Revolution with the explosion of ‘Big Data’. This ‘Big Data’ is characterized by the four V’s: large volume, many different varieties, high velocity of production, and uncertain veracity

  • With this abundance of data comes a huge demand for Data Scientists and Data Analysts who can use statistical and computational techniques to process, critique, and elaborate on the available data.

  • This ability to analyse and integrate vast quantities of data to produce logical conclusions is critical for every decision made in increasingly ‘data-driven’ sectors, from engineering and architecture to finance and AI.

  1. Engineering

  • Experts in a range of engineering fields are required to produce innovative solutions to the world’s ongoing challenges. Due to the diversity of these challenges, there are a range of engineering specialisms which will become progressively more important in the future.

  • Robotics Engineers, for example, are crucial for the automation of manual work traditionally performed by humans. Organizations surveyed in The World Economic Forum’s ‘Future of Jobs Report 2023’, for example, states that 34% of tasks are carried out by machines. By 2027, this is predicted to increase to 42%.

  • Other Engineering specialisms vital for the challenges we face today include Biotechnology Engineering and Fintech (finance and technology) Engineering

  1. Renewable Transition

  • Renewable Transition Experts will be in high demand as the consequences of climate change continue to wreak havoc globally. International agreements, such as the Paris Agreement and the European Green Deal, add another layer of urgency for those specializing in the renewable transition as businesses and governments must content with sustainability and decarbonization targets.

  • Careers relating to the renewable transition range from Renewable Energy and ‘Smart City’ Engineers, Decarbonisation Strategists, and Sustainable Transport Engineers

  1. Healthcare Professional

  • Despite the rise of AI and the associated loss of human touch in many sectors, healthcare is one sector where human empathy and decision making will always be required. The combination of an expanding and simultaneously ageing population means that healthcare professionals are highly sought after. WHO reports that by 2035, there will be a global shortage of 13 million health workers.

  • The growing appreciation for the importance of mental health has led to an increased demand for Mental Health Specialists, including counsellors and psychologists.

  • Alongside this, preventative care strategies are gaining traction as a way of avoiding future health complications.

  1. Digital Marketing and Advertising Specialist

  • Digital Marketing and Advertising Specialists will be able to take advantage of the huge opportunities offered by the development of online shopping and social media platforms.

  • Understanding evolving consumer habits and the ability to successful market target audiences will be crucial in a digital world that is becoming increasingly noisy. With 4 million more ‘digitally-enabled roles’ projected by 2027 globally, e-commerce is a fast growing industry.
