Tackling the Math Section on the SAT and DSAT

Preparing for the Digital Math SAT (DSAT) involves some unique strategies in addition to the general preparation tips for the Math SAT. This section of the test can be a source of stress for many, but if you keep the following tips in mind, things can go smoothly in the test day:

Understand the Digital Format

Spend time getting comfortable with the digital test interface, including how to navigate between questions, use on-screen tools, and flag questions for review. Most importantly, make sure you know how to use the digital tools provided, such as the on-screen calculator, highlighting tool, and answer eliminator. Do not stress when the questions become unbearably difficult – the DSAT wants to push students to the limits of their knowledge.

Build a Strong Foundation

Ensure a solid understanding of algebra, geometry, basic trigonometry, and data analysis. In the SAT, key topics include linear equations, functions, systems of equations, ratios, percentages, and problem-solving with complex numbers. What you need to do is identify and spend extra time on areas where you struggle. To do this use digital practice tests to pinpoint these areas.

Practice Regularly

Regularly take full-length digital practice tests under timed conditions. Use official digital practice tests to simulate the real testing environment as closely as possible. After each practice test, carefully review your mistakes to understand where you went wrong and how to avoid similar errors in the future. Remember, the actual work starts after the test: analyze your mistakes and reinforce in areas where more work might be needed.

Test-Taking Strategies

Develop a strategy for pacing yourself so that you can complete all questions within the allotted time. Remember: don’t spend too long on any one question. There is no penalty for guessing on the SAT, so it’s better to make an educated guess than to leave a question blank. Quickly go through the test and answer the questions you find easiest first. This helps build confidence and ensures you don’t run out of time on questions you can answer correctly. Ultimately, narrow down your choices on multiple-choice questions by eliminating obviously incorrect answers – the answer is always in front of your eyes.

Calculator Use

Practice using the on-screen calculator provided in the digital test to ensure you are comfortable with its functions and layout. If allowed, bring a familiar calculator as a backup. Make sure it is approved by the test guidelines – and make sure it has enough charge!

General Tips

A positive mindset can greatly impact your performance. Practice relaxation techniques if you tend to get anxious during tests. Make sure to get plenty of sleep the night before the test. Being well-rested helps with concentration and overall performance. Eat a healthy meal before the test and stay hydrated. Avoid excessive caffeine or sugar which can cause jitters or crashes. By combining these tips with consistent practice and review, you can improve your performance on the digital Math SAT and increase your overall score.
